On our first day we march to the Piazza della Repubblica and set up ready for a painting session.
This square has an amazing Arch, Alvaro decides to paint the huge Arch, the view is stunning and beyond the Arch the buildings provide us with a lesson in perspective.
Alvaro has the amazing ability to interpret a bustling scene in front of him. His experience shows as he explains to us what elements he will keep for the painting and what he chooses to ignore. I love the way he creates a feeling of distance as you look through the Arch.
It would be very easy to get distracted, this beautiful merry go round was also in the square.
This is my easel and equipment set up ready for painting. I only get to the first wash today. It is 4.30 pm, we are all getting tired. Some have already gone back to the hotel. Alvaro tells us not to expect to do finished paintings on this workshop. The real work will begin when we get home. He says to watch and learn. I hope he is right. Another fantastic day of painting comes to an end in Florence.
