How can I explain how excited I am to be in Florence. My all time favourite artists are Michelangelo and Leonardo and I know that during the next few days I will see some of their work. I can hardly wait to find David and the many other treasures left behind by these two maestros.
With our new Italian artist friend Liz we head for the Centro of Firenze.
Our first stop will be a Gelateria.
The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore is the main church of Florence, Italy. Il Duomo di Firenze, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style to the design of Arnolfo di Cambio.
I love the first glimpse , it is so enticing. As we get closer the enormity of this amazing structure becomes evident. It is has the most detailed facade I have ever seen. The dome is another inexplicable feat for mankind and to this day the science of the structure is unknown.
While the outside of the Duomo is so detailed, the inside is more serene.
The cathedral’s interior is less colorful and decorations were kept to a minimum. The exception is the fresco on the dome’s interior, painted between 1572 and 1579 by Giorgio Vasari and Frederico Zuccari. The fresco depicts the Last Judgment.
After about fours hours wandering the streets of Florence we meander our way back to our hotel. Tomorrow we will have a guided tour, I am looking forward to finding out more.
