I was pleased to welcome Deborah Melville as our Guest Artist in my February art newsletter. Deborah is a talented illustrator who specialises in bringing animals to live through her watercolour portraits.
A professionally trained and experienced Graphic Designer and Illustrator, Deborah has applied her meticulous and outstanding skills to capture the personality and spirit of the furry friends of her clients.
Notably, a number of Deborah’s portraits have gone on to prestigious homes, including the prize winning race horses; Sunline, Northerly and three-time Melbourne Cup Winner, Makybe Diva, which are on display at the Victorian Racing Museum.
Kept busy by a constant stream of commissions, Deborah longs to paint her three year old golden retriever, whose rare white gold colouring would make him a wonderful subject.
“Being a professional Graphic designer and illustrator I have a trained eye for detail and tonal values. Colours are mixed accordingly starting with a translucent colour like Raw Sienna then following up with something like Vandyke Brown. This order brings a painting to life,” she says.
Deborah’s process is not for the faint hearted, each portrait starts with a photo taken either the client or Deborah herself. The sketches are then transferred to 400gsm water colour paper with the assistance of a magnifying glass and a steady hand.
Portraits can take anywhere from two weeks to two months and are truly a testament to Deborah’s eye for detail, with every muscle formation and vein structure accounted for, these animals seem to leap right of the page.
Deborah’s portraits make a wonderful gift for someone to remember a family pet or to capture a moment in time. For more information or to purchase a gift certificate for a loved one, visit the website or contact Deborah on 0427 786 236 or firstname.lastname@example.org
