We all passed through customs easily despite approx 5gms of chocolate in our cases, which we brought over as gifts for our hosts at Lily Lane. It was nice to see Jill’s lovely face waiting for us on ‘the other side’. We also met Wayan ( the Bali name for first born) who is the manager at Lily Lane. We waited at the designated spot for our cars to come. It was quite a busy place, cars and people going everywhere, then all of a sudden I heard loud screaming and saw a big black car racing past, as they raced off into the distance I notice it is my sister and brother in law and friends Mandy and Greg. Two more artists arriving very excitedly! They flew in from Singapore and it was an incredible coincidence that we even saw them.
The feeling of the lovely warm weather was great. We all began stripping off in stages. It was almost like a competition, some were able to stick it out with leggings and cardigans on until we arrived back at our Villas several hours later. It brought back memories of visiting family in Penang, that hot, sticky almost swollen feeling the tropics gives us. But in a few days we will acclimatise and our bodies will not respond so intensely.
Seven of us all piled in to the lovely air conditioned car and Wayan and Jill drove us to the art shop. On the way we were like clowns at the circus, not knowing which way to look. The colour, vibrancy, polite horn tooting, statues, motor bikes….. the list goes on, it was fascinating. I love arriving into new countries, my senses were having a party.
We visited a very well stocked art shop despite a case full of art supplies, I needed a few extra materials. Don’t we all! Mainly canvases for my students as I could not manage to squeeze them into my case. Unfortunately there were not enough canvases there for our group, but luckily Jill with her local knowledge knew somewhere else to take us. I grabbed a big pot of gesso just I case the quality was not so good. Once we finished our shopping we were ready to head for Lily Lane.
We had been travelling since 5am so we were all beginning to flag a bit. Wayan stopped and bought us all the most amazing freshly squeezed, icy cold juices. They were exactly what we needed and we had a slurping comPetition trying to drink every last drop.
The drive to Ubud is stunning.
